Ellen Marie Torrez (Granny), 88, passed away peacefully Sept. 9, 2014, surrounded by family. She was born Jan. 19, 1926, to Bynal and Norma (Radar) Benson, in Denton, Kan. She married Chanito John Torrez on Nov. 27, 1945, in Troy, Kan., and was married 54 years before his passing in 1999. Ellen and John started their family in Kansas before moving to Washington to raise them. Mom started a nursing career in Kansas and contained it when she arrived here and worked at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. She was always a nurse at heart, caring for everyone. She had the magic touch. She worked many other jobs, including elevator operator at the Brier Building before becoming a mail carrier in the Asotin/Anatone, area where she retired after 19 years. After retiring, she returned to work as an in-home health care aide. Mom and dad enjoyed fishing and camping. Mom enjoyed writing poems, getting bargains at yard sales and thrift stores, and could stretch a dollar like no other. She also enjoyed bingo. She loved cooking and baking for others. Her food was so good and so full of love. She truly was the matriarch of her family. She taught us compassion and the true meaning of unconditional love. Anyone who met her knew this. She was a blessing to all. Mom is survived by her children, Theresa (Bill) Pangle, Pam (Dave) Herzog, John “Bud” Torrez, Mary Curry and Peggy Junes. She is also survived by six siblings, Mary Halstead, Dora (Keith) Widman, Donna Simpson, Sonny Benson, Nancy (Harry) Stearns and Roy Benson. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Chanito John; her parents, Bynal and Norma; and a daughter, Norma C. Herndon. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Merchant Funeral Home, 1000 Seventh St. in Clarkston with pastor Steve Kingsley officiating. Burial will follow at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston. The family wishes to thank all the nurses and aides that have taken care of our mom and granny for the past 11 years, especially Jacob, her favorite.
